I have always been a Cellist who "Played outside the BOX". As a kid I would improvised to Pink Floyd and loved sharing my cello sound in what was then considered alternative groups. Much to my classical teachers dilemma. During High School I worked at Peaches Record Store in the '70's. I was their Classical Music specialist. And soaked up everybit of new albums that would come thru the door.
Then one day "The Roger Kellaway Cello Quartet" arrived, and my world vision for the cello changed forever. Jazz pop feel with piano & cello. The spacious atmosphere allowed my mind to relax and wonder. Here's one cut below from the album. YES!! ALBUM :) |

In college, while all my studies were focused on classical cello techniques and repertoire, I continued to be drawn towards what the cello voice could add to enhance the listeners experience. I amazing the amazing good fortune to meet in a masterclass and work maverick cellist, David Darling. During this time he was touring with The Paul Winter Consort. He provided a mentorship and friendship that lasted a lifetime. His encouragement and feeling of being granted permission to play with conviction ALL forms of music and let me fill in the blanks with my music making.
Here is one of the most beautiful and spiritual musical examples of David's music. RIP my friend. |
